Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Heritage steam railroad — Durango

A 45-mile coal-fired, steam-powered narrow gauge journey along the Animas River gorge between Durango and the mining town of Silverton, on track laid in 1881-1882 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway.

Railroad Connection

Original Denver & Rio Grande narrow gauge line, in continuous operation since 1881; designated a National Historic Landmark and a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

This is one of the last places in North America where you can ride a steam train on its original route, behind locomotives that have worked this same line for a century. It is the standard other heritage railroads are measured against.

History

Built to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains; passenger service has run continuously since 1882.
